Meet the Foundation

The American Thoracic Society (ATS) Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the American Thoracic Society, which is a global society comprised of physicians, researchers, health providers, educators, patients, and corporate partners working to help the world breathe.

The members of the ATS recognize how cutbacks in federal funding for biomedical research threaten the pursuit of new treatments and cures for patients burdened by lung disease. Investigators early in their careers are especially vulnerable to having a lifetime of discoveries terminated before they even begin.

This is much more than a professional loss: it is a humanitarian one.

The ATS Foundation supports young investigators in respiratory health with grants that  enable them to launch their research, and ultimately their careers. Established in 2004 to raise funds for the ATS Foundation Research Program, the ATS Foundation has now expanded to focus on raising money to invest in five strategic areas:

  • ATS Foundation Research Program
  • MECOR (Methods in Epidemiologic, Clinical and Operations Research)
  • Ziskind Clinical Research Scholar Award
  • ATS Assembly Awards and Scholarships
  • Medical Education Research

Because the ATS covers all the administrative costs, 100% of research donations go directly to funding research grants for early career investigators.

Since its inception, the ATS Foundation Research Program has awarded $19.3 million to 263 investigators who have gone on to secure $330 million in federal funding  - a return on investment of $17 per dollar awarded! These “seed” funding grants helped launch their applications for subsequent grants – grants they would not have received without prior funding.

Invest in early career scientists today, to launch them on a lifetime of discoveries to improve respiratory health.
