What We Do

HomeWhat We Do ▶ Thank you!
Thank you!

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

Thank you for everything you’ve done in the past year to support the American Thoracic Society and the ATS Foundation! Together, we are fostering discovery and building a future where we can all breathe better.

We’re thrilled to report that we have surpassed our $550,000 year-end goal for research by $70,000!

Your generosity helps sustain our research, education, and training programs—benefiting lung disease patients, their families, and communities worldwide.

You made our 2014 successes possible… and put us on solid ground for an amazing 2015!
Research awards for outstanding young investigators
  • Awarded bridge grants to six promising young investigators who submitted excellent applications but just missed the NIH pay line. These grants will help them generate preliminary data and increase the likelihood of successful funding when they resubmit their proposals to the NIH;
  • More than doubled the number of unrestricted grants to early-stage investigators in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine;
  • Awarded partner grants to eight outstanding early-stage investigators working on cures and treatments for a range of respiratory diseases including pulmonary fibrosis, alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency, and pulmonary hypertension;
  • Provided grants to exceptional ATS MECOR Program alumni—improving global health through research and education in middle and low income countries.
Unique programs meeting the changing needs of our field
  • Added Medical Education to our awards portfolio to support the design, implementation, and evaluation of novel curricular approaches and strategies focused on the training of medical residents, fellows and junior faculty across the respiratory spectrum
  • Launched the Ziskind Clinical Research Scholar Program, which honors outstanding pulmonary and critical care fellows engaged in clinical research and medical education. We awarded our inaugural scholar in 2014.
Some special news about 2015

This year, the ATS Foundation celebrates its 10th Anniversary!

In the past ten years, the ATS Foundation has awarded $11 million in grants to 183 investigators who have gone on to win $143 million in major grants. Not only is that a fantastic return on investment, it’s an investment in a future where we prevent and cure respiratory diseases for our patients.

We’re launching a special 10th Anniversary Campaign and will be celebrating all year long. We’ll keep you posted about how you can join the campaign, help us build upon the successes of the past ten years, and make an even bigger impact in 2015 and beyond.
ATS Assemblies rise to the challenge

At the 2014 Leadership Summit, assembly leaders voted to establish an ATS Assembly Challenge in support of the ATS Foundation Research Program. The Assembly Challenge taps into the grassroots community power of the ATS assemblies.

The Challenge kicked off on #GivingTuesday, on December 2, a special day worldwide dedicated to the joy of giving, and ran all month long. All gifts to the Foundation, no matter what program inspired you, counted towards a member’s primary assembly progress.

There were three ways to win the Challenge:

  • Be the assembly with the most dollars raised in 2014;
  • Be the assembly with the highest member participation rate in 2014;
  • Be the assembly with the largest average gift per member raised in 2014.
ATS Assembly Challenge Results

And the winners are...

  • Most dollars raised: Allergy Immunology & Inflammation with $63,549
  • Highest member participation: Behavioral Science and Health Services Research with 20.86%
  • Largest average gift per member: Behavioral Science and Health Services Research with $98.27

Congratulations to the Allergy Immunology & Inflammation and Behavioral Science and Health Services Research assemblies! They will receive special recognition throughout ATS communications channels and at ATS 2015.

We’d like to highlight three assemblies in particular who capitalized on #GivingTuesday with great success: Behavioral Science and Health Services Research, Clinical Problems, and Respiratory Cell & Molecular Biology. Their special #GivingTuesday outreach brought in the most #GivingTuesday online gifts and inspired first-time giving among their members.

In fact, Respiratory Cell & Molecular Biology’s outreach efforts inspired 26 members to give to the Foundation for the very first time during December alone! Just to give you an idea of how impressive that is, the next highest new-giver assembly brought in 6 new donors.

Thank you for rising to the challenge and thank you for your generous support of the ATS Foundation. Your giving is life-changing for young investigators, patients, and communities worldwide.

Celebrating our 10th Anniversary

Thank you again for making 2014—and the past ten years—such a success. Let’s keep up the momentum throughout 2015 and beyond. Your generosity transforms lives!

Wishing you a very happy 2015,
ATS Foundation Board of Trustees
