In 2013, the ATS Foundation and the Pediatrics Assembly established the Robert B. Mellins, MD, Outstanding Achievement Endowed Award honoring Dr. Mellins’ legacy as a founder of pediatric pulmonology.

The 2015 awardee is Eric Austin, MD, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, and director of their Pediatric Pulmonary Hypertension Program. Dr. Austin aims to better understand why certain patients are susceptible to pulmonary arterial hypertension and others are not. To address this question, Dr. Austin has built a team of physician-scientists and biomedical informatics experts to apply cutting-edge genomic technologies and methods to advance understanding of the genetic pathways that contribute to the pathogenesis of PAH.

“Eric Austin is an outstanding young clinician-scientist whose contributions have already deeply impacted the field. He is truly destined to become a key future leader of pediatric pulmonary medicine for years to come,” says Steven H. Abman, MD, professor of pediatric pulmonary medicine, and director of the Pediatric Heart Lung Center at University of Colorado Denver (where Dr. Austin completed his residency).

Congratulations, Dr. Austin!

The ATS supports the ATS Foundation’s administrative expenses, assuring that every dollar contributed goes directly to support programs.
