Project Title: Use of Soluble ST2 as a Diagnostic Biomarker for Lung Injury

Foundation Support: $40,000 ATS Foundation Unrestricted Research Grant in Critical Care

Acute respiratory distress syndrome is a devastating lung condition that affects over 200,000 patients in the U.S. every year. Because it’s difficult to diagnose, patients often do not receive necessary treatment.

With the support of his ATS Foundation research grant, Ednan Bajwa, MD, is looking to change that.

Dr. Bajwa, an assistant professor at Massachusetts General Hospital, is exploring whether a blood test that measures levels of a protein called ST2 can be used to identify patients who have ARDS.

“Simplifying ARDS diagnosis may lead to more patients getting the drugs they need,” says Dr. Bajwa. “This will improve survival rates for this devastating condition.”

The mortality rate of ARDS is as high as 40 percent, and those who do survive often experience permanent lung damage. With an unrestricted research grant fully funded by the ATS Foundation, Dr. Bajwa has the potential to give ARDS patients a fighting chance.

The generous support of ATS Foundation donors provides “seed funding” for early career investigators like Dr. Bajwa to do this vital research. Thank you!
