Research into the How and Why of Lung DiseaseThe Foundation will work closely with the ATS' expanding Research Program. The program has done well in soliciting proposals, in selecting the most outstanding applicants to fund, and in administering the grants given. Nonetheless, research always needs to grow to meet more patients' needs. The response of the scientific community to our "Request for Applications" indicates a broad and deep need for independent funding for clinical and basic research. The Foundation makes the case for private support of research and training for lung disease, and for the Foundation to serve as the right vehicle for such support. The century-old Society that the Foundation supports, the ATS, has the resources for soliciting, evaluating, and administering a first rate grants program. It has the reach to the right scientific community, the expertise to evaluate new ideas and proposals, and the forum (its international conference and journals) where presentation of new findings reaches the right community. |
