Letter From the Chair, Summer 2017

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

I believe in the ATS, and I believe in research.  This is why I feel privileged to chair the ATS Foundation. In its relatively short history, the Foundation has earned a reputation for supporting bright early career researchers. For every dollar we have awarded, our recipients have gone on to receive $13 more for their research. You make this possible—thank you for your generosity!

I am particularly proud that the Foundation’s Research Grant Program funds scientists around the world. The ATS motto is “We help the world breathe,” and we can only fulfill that mission by acting internationally, including by funding researchers working outside the U.S.

In this Bulletin, you can read about one of those investigators, Darcy Wagner, PhD, who just started a new lab at Sweden’s Lund University. She was one of six 2016 grant recipients, including graduates of the ATS Methods, Epidemiologic, Clinical, and Operations Research (MECOR) program, who are conducting their research abroad.

Wherever they work, young scientists are having a difficult time launching careers because of funding cutbacks. To change that reality, I’m happy to announce, the ATS 2017 Foundation Benefit raised over $425,000 for research in a single evening!

To help us build on this momentum, we recruited Paul Mouravieff, a veteran fundraising professional who has also worked in biomedical research institutions and with pharmaceutical companies, as the Foundation’s new director.  Paul shares my optimism about the next chapter in the Foundation’s compelling story.

I invite you to help us write that chapter by donating generously. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of promising researchers and, most important, patients and their families.
