Letter From the Chair, Fall 2017

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The word philanthropy derives from Greek and Latin roots that can be translated as either “loving humankind” or “useful to humankind.” Either translation aptly describes the ATS Foundation.

From its beginning, the Foundation has supported promising investigators who want to alleviate the suffering caused by respiratory disease, critical illness, and sleep disorders.

The growth of the Foundation in recent years owes much to the efforts of James Donohue, our past chair, who is featured in this issue.  On May 19 during our annual benefit, I’ll have the privilege of presenting Jim with the Breathing for Life Award in recognition of his philanthropy, mentorship, and research in respiratory medicine.

Another word with an important Latin root also defines the ATS Foundation’s work: innovation. Our research program funds novus, or new, approaches to solving intractable problems. In this Bulletin, you can read about 2016 grant recipient Robert Dickson, MD, who is using novel molecular techniques to uncover the connection between the microbiome and the lungs during sepsis.

The words philanthropic and innovative came together to define Andrew Tager, MD who passed away in August. Andy was a recipient of an ATS partnership grant that led to a new therapeutic target for pulmonary fibrosis. But, more important, he is remembered for his infectious enthusiasm and generous spirit, which colleagues recall in an article in these pages.

As we approach the end of the year, I urge you to contribute to the Foundation. Your philanthropy can help launch a new era of innovation in respiratory medicine and give hope to patients everywhere.

Your generosity, now and in the past, is a wellspring of hope. Thank you.
