Sonia Buist, MD, receives Vision Award
from ATS President Atul Malhotra, MD
The American Thoracic Society and the ATS Foundation are proud to recognize the first ATS Foundation Vision Award honoree, Sonia Buist, MD, an ATS past president and the founder of the ATS Methods in Epidemiologic, Clinical and Operations Research (MECOR) program.
The Vision Award honors an innovative individual who has had a transformative impact on the delivery of health care in pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine.
MECOR is one of the ATS’s top global strategies for addressing respiratory diseases and health disparities in developing regions. For over two decades, MECOR has introduced hundreds of physicians and other health care professionals in Africa, Asia, Latin America, India, Turkey, and Vietnam to courses in research methods. Graduates of the program have gone on to significantly influence and improve respiratory health care in their respective countries.
Sonia Buist, MD, is a past member of the ATS Foundation Board of Trustees. As a trustee, she was a tireless advocate for increasing philanthropic resources toward MECOR in the larger goal of enhancing global understanding of respiratory diseases. Since 2011, the Foundation has awarded four research awards annually to MECOR program graduates with meritorious proposals, enabling them to transition from trainees to investigators.
Sonia Buist, MD, is a passionate advocate for advancing global public health policy through research, and truly embodies the ATS vision of “helping the world breathe.”
The ATS Foundation Vision Award was presented to Dr. Buist during the Opening Ceremony of the ATS 2016 International Conference.
